Launch of the African against Ebola Solidarity SMS Campaign

The launched witnessed a high attendance from senior executives of all the six telecom operators in the country signalling their commitment to the course to help in the fight against Ebola.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer Kwaku Sakyi Addo stated that following a Business Roundtable of conference to get business organisations on the continent to raise funds to fight Ebola by the African Union in Adiss Ababa, Mobile telecommunications companies operating in Africa committed to launch a continent wide campaign dubbed United Against Ebola .
‘ Consequent to this , leading mobile telecommunications operators in 41 African countries have signed up to partner and support the AU to initiate an SMS based Pan-African campaign to raise funds to help fight Ebola’.
The campaign which is expected to last for three month will be conducted under the umbrella of the African Union Support to Support to Ebola Outbreak in West Africa( AWEOWA), and the United Nations Mission for Ebola Emergency Response(UNMEER) with its headquarters in Ghana.
With the collaboration of UNICEF Ghana’s mobile operators will join other corporate organisations throughout the 41 countires in Africa where mobile network operators are participating in this campaign to solicit for funds through the a special short code set aside for subscribers to text and make a donation to the special Ebola Fund. And that short code is 7979.
In an interview with Biztechafrica in Accra, the CEO of the Telecom Chamber explained that all subscribers in Ghana can contribute to the fund simply by texting :STOP EBOLA to short code number 7979 and by so doing they are contributing GH.1.00 to the fight against Ebola.
