Ebola Ghana Alert and IReachUAfrica go on a sentization outreach in Kafodzidzi

 On Tuesday. 25th November 2014, a group of young men and women went to educate people in a village called Kafodzidzi in the central region of Ghana. Kafodzizi is a small fishing community on the coast. This project was undertaken by IReachUAfrica and Ispace foundation's project Ebola Ghana Alert. Ebola Ghana Alert is a made up of a team of committed people with extensive background in IT,web development and social media.Our aim is to provide people in Ghana and beyond with reliable information which will educate them and easy to use applications for alerting and disseminating of information to the general public about Ebola.Ebola Ghana Alert covered this sensitization programme online via our social media pages so as to keep the Ghana and the world as a whole informed.


The event started on with a documentary Monday 244th November 2014. Thia a documentary on the dangers and preventative ways of how to fight Ebola and cholera. Volunteers were selected to help with the education.On Tuesday. The  team met the the people of the town again to have a face to face talk and educate them on  how to wash their hands properly, how to deal with cholera outbreaks and how to prevent Ebola or curb it as and when it comes into Ghana.After a short sketch on how to deal with Cholera, The floor was open for questions and contribution.

People ask how cholera is contracted and the exact signs of cholera. The Speaker for the day Mr. Kobby Blay told them that Cholera is an infection of the small intestines.The main symptoms are watery diarrhea and vomiting. Transmission occurs primarily by drinking water or eating food that has been contaminated by the feces (waste product) of an infected person, including one with no apparent symptoms.With this said People also talking about how Kafodzidzi needs more clean water outlets since most of their water sources are contaminated.Mr Blay told them to try and keep water bodies clean until  the government brings in pipe borne water into the community.They were then taught how to wash their hands properly in 6 simple steps.  The steps are as follows

1.Wet hands and apply soap.  Rub palms together until soap is bubbly.
2. Rub each palm over the back of the other hand
3. Rub between your fingers on each hand.
4. Rub your hands with the fingers together.
5. Rub around each of your thumbs.
6. Rub in circles on your palms. Then rinse and dry your hands and close running water with the tissue you used to dry your hands.

After this demonstration,Mr Blay spoke on how to prevent contracting,spreading and preventing Ebola,He mentioned that Ebola is a viral disease which is transmitted through bodily fluids.Ways to prevent the spread of Ebola.

 1.Avoid direct contact with dead bodies. Esp people who died of Ebola. Leave that to the medical experts.
2. Avoid direct contact with infected persons suspected having Ebola
3. Cook all foods well especially Bush meat
4. Don't touch dead bats and bush meat with your bare hands
5. When someone is suspected to have Ebola call health workers ASAP

 What are the symptoms of Ebola
         Nausea and vomiting.
         Diarrhea (may be bloody)
         Red eyes.
        Chest pain and cough.
        Stomach pain.
        Severe weight loss.
        Bleeding, usually from the eyes, and bruising (people near death may bleed from other orifices, such as ears, nose and other openings on the body.

After the education,The IreachUAfrica team donated soaps.bleach and water storing barrels to the community clinic, school, funeral home and the church  and advised that they washed their hands well every-time and teach others on how to wash their hands properly to avoid contamination of any sought.
